‘You are not Hindus’ dig at BJP draws protests

Rahul Gandhi’s criticism of the BJP in the Lok Sabha, emphasizing non-violence and courage across all religions, ignites a heated debate.

On July 1, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi sharply criticized the ruling BJP in the Lok Sabha, accusing those who identify as Hindus of perpetuating “violence and hate” incessantly. This statement provoked a storm of protests from the treasury benches, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi stressing that labeling the entire Hindu society as violent is a grave issue.

During the ongoing Parliament session in New Delhi on July 1, 2024, Rahul Gandhi, speaking as the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, clarified that his remarks were directed at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He asserted that the BJP, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), or Mr. Modi do not represent the entirety of Hindu society.

Holding up a picture of Lord Shiva, Gandhi conveyed a message of fearlessness and non-violence. He further cited teachings from various religions to reinforce his point.

“All religions and our revered figures preach non-violence and courage, yet those who claim to be Hindus only propagate violence, hatred, and falsehood… Aap Hindu ho hi nahi (You are not Hindus),” Gandhi declared.

This critique led to an uproar from the members of the treasury benches.

Home Minister Amit Shah demanded an apology from Gandhi to the House and the nation for offending millions who identify as Hindus.

Shah countered Gandhi’s stance by referencing the Emergency and the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, questioning Gandhi’s authority to speak on non-violence given the Congress party’s historical “terror” acts.

Gandhi, however, continued to emphasize the teachings of courage found in Islam, Christianity, Buddhism, Jainism, and Sikhism, highlighting the universal importance of fearlessness.

He accused the BJP of systematically attacking the Constitution and the core principles of India, pointing out that millions have opposed the ruling party’s ideologies.

“I was targeted under Prime Minister Modi’s orders. Over 20 cases were filed against me, my house was confiscated, and I faced 55 hours of interrogation by the ED,” Gandhi stated.

Despite these adversities, he expressed pride in the collective effort to safeguard the Constitution.

“It is gratifying to hear BJP members now echoing ‘Jai Samvidhan’ after me,” he remarked.

Gandhi also voiced his pride in being part of the Opposition.

“I am content and proud to be in the Opposition. For us, there is something greater than power, and that is the truth,” he affirmed.

During his inaugural speech as the Leader of Opposition, Gandhi again displayed a picture of Lord Shiva, prompting Speaker Om Birla to remind him of the rule against showing placards in the House.

Gandhi reiterated that all religions, including Hinduism, Islam, and Sikhism, uphold the values of courage and fearlessness.
