His leadership roles have included heading the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad and serving as the first Commissioner of Police for the Mira-Bhayandar-Vasai-Virar region. In 2023, his distinguished service led to his appointment as the Director General of the NIA. However, he is perhaps best remembered for his bravery during the 26/11 Mumbai attacks.

On the night of November 26, 2008, Mumbai descended into chaos. Despite the attack occurring outside his jurisdiction, Mr. Date, who was then the Additional Commissioner of Police, Central Region, took immediate action. From his residence in Malabar Hill, he rushed to the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) railway station. Along the way, he armed himself and gathered six officers to assist in the response.

At CST, Mr. Date learned that the terrorists had moved towards Cama and Albless Hospital, a facility for women and children. Anticipating a potential hostage situation, he led his team to the hospital complex, where he encountered the attackers firing from the rooftop. While attempting to enter the hospital building, Mr. Date was caught in a grenade explosion, thrown by Kasab. The blast, which occurred just three feet away, tragically killed Sub-Inspector Prakash More and injured Mr. Date and three other officers. Despite his injuries, Mr. Date remained on the scene, directing his wounded colleagues to seek medical assistance while continuing to lead the operation.

During the confrontation, another grenade exploded nearby, causing further injuries to Mr. Date. Despite bleeding profusely from shrapnel wounds to his legs and face, he continued to fight. The engagement prevented the terrorists from launching additional attacks in the hospital, buying critical time and saving countless lives.
