Couple on Scooter in Bengaluru Assaulted: ‘Have Any Shame?’

Incident of Harassment and Assault in Bengaluru

A Disturbing Encounter

In a disconcerting incident that unfolded outside a park in Bengaluru, a couple was subjected to harassment and assault by a group of five men, according to officials on Friday. The ordeal, which was captured on video, occurred as the couple sat on a scooter facing each other. The man, dressed in an orange t-shirt, and the woman, clad in a burqa, found themselves in a heated exchange with several men, one of whom audaciously filmed the woman.

Confrontation and Intimidation

The video footage reveals the men questioning the woman about whether her family was aware of her whereabouts. They proceeded to challenge the man on his association with a woman of a different faith, hurling abuses at the couple in the process. The group went further to threaten the woman, questioning her moral integrity for being in the company of a man while wearing a burqa.

Official Response and Investigation

Girish, the Deputy Commissioner of Police, provided insight into the situation, stating, “The couple was sitting on a scooter when five people questioned them. The girl was wearing a burqa. We have received a complaint from the woman based on which we have registered a case….We are continuing our investigation.” Despite police initially denying any violence, another video surfaced showing the accused men surrounding the man and striking him with what appeared to be a wooden log.

Legal Action and Arrests

Following the filing of the woman’s complaint, law enforcement swiftly took action by arresting the five accused individuals, among whom was a juvenile. Girish, the police officer, remarked, “They mainly asked the woman why she was sitting there. We will find out more during investigation.”

Government Stance Against Moral Policing

Karnataka Minister Priyank Kharge strongly condemned the incident, emphasizing that the state would “not tolerate” any form of moral policing. He stated, “This is not a Bihar or Uttar Pradesh or Madhya Pradesh. Karnataka is a progressive state.”
