Telangana Jagruthi President’s Hunger Strike for Social Reform

A Call for Recognition

Telangana Jagruthi President K Kavitha has embarked on a day-long hunger strike at Dharna Chowk near Indira Park. The primary demand of this protest is the installation of a statue of the revered social reformer Jyotirao Phule within the premises of the Telangana Legislative Assembly. This move is aimed at honoring Phule’s legacy and his immense contributions to social justice and equality.

Ignored Appeals and Persistent Efforts

The hunger strike by the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) Member of the Legislative Council (MLC) comes after repeated appeals to the Speaker and the Congress-led state government were met with inaction. Ms. Kavitha’s protest is scheduled to run from 11 am to 5 pm, highlighting her commitment to ensuring Phule’s contributions do not go unrecognized.

Support from Various Quarters

Ms. Kavitha’s agitation has garnered widespread support from diverse groups. Representatives from backward class (BC) associations, doctors, lawyers, student groups, and civil society members have rallied behind her cause. They collectively echo the demand for recognizing Jyotirao Phule’s legacy and advocate for a stronger push towards securing the rights of backward classes.

Continuous Advocacy for Social Justice

Under the leadership of Ms. Kavitha, Telangana Jagruthi has conducted 14 roundtable meetings across the state. These meetings have focused on highlighting the issues faced by backward classes and pressing for necessary reservations. Ms. Kavitha remains steadfast in demanding the implementation of the Kamareddy BC Declaration, a significant electoral promise made by the Congress party during the Assembly elections.

A Legacy of Social Reform

Jyotirao Phule (1827-1890) was a pioneering social reformer, writer, and activist renowned for his advocacy for women’s education and the upliftment of backward classes. Alongside his wife, Savitribai Phule, he established the first school for girls in India in 1848. Their efforts marked a significant step towards breaking societal barriers and promoting educational equality.

Championing Equality and Justice

Phule’s fight against caste-based discrimination and untouchability was instrumental in advocating for equal rights and dignity for all. He founded the Satyashodhak Samaj (Society of Truth Seekers) with the mission of promoting social equality and justice. His work continues to inspire generations to challenge oppressive structures and strive for a more equitable society.
